Thomas Harper, age fifteen, rose from bed and slumbered across his apartment building toward the bathroom to begin his daily ritual. He combed his hair and brushed his teeth and rummaged through a pile of dirty clothing to smell out the cleanest outfit he could find before rushing off to catch the bus to school.
